So… going through my beautiful copy of the Bible, with its lovely colour inserts of photos of Palestine (yes, pre–Israel!), I happed upon these passages which got me thinking.
Exodus features the establishment of a new Pharaoh’s rule over Egypt. Moses kills someone and flees to Midian. 2:16 claims that the ‘Priest of Midian had seven daughters’, and 2:18 names this priest as Reu’el. Since Moses helps out his daughters Reu’el marries off his youngest (Zipporah) to Moses.
2:23 features the Pharaoh dying. Then starts Chapter 3 and features Moses playing the rôle of shepherd. But suddenly his father–in–law has the name Jethro, though he still serves as a priest of Midian! He also appears in 18:1, receiving news of Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt. Nowhere does it mention that Moses has married someone else. Indeed, 2:23 states “in the course of those many days the king of Egypt died.”
Does this mean that Exodus features two separate and distinct characters called Moses? I think that Mose means ‘son’ in Egyptian, as in Thutmose (son of Thoth), so perhaps his name ended up superceded by his title of Mose in Israelite legend and accounts of the Exodus? _________________

So what does Aaron's name mean? He was a big part of it all too.
