I thought Intellectual Fighter did a good job with daraba, and I checked his references at Islamcity's transliteration engine.  I could see where he got what he said.

On the other hand, I could also see All-Brain's points, since "set forth" (the usual usage of daraba in Qu'ran) is never absent the sense of striking down, casting in stone.  So the act of striking to put an END to something still inures to the verb.

I could find no Bible Hebrew root for drb with a similar meaning, in BibleWorks.  By contrast, "command" (setting forth) is dbr, aka "dabar", which is stronger than Bible Hebrew "amar", to say.

So maybe "laying down the law" would be of value to interpret daraba -- but in the wife-beating verse the logical progression problem All-Brains raised, is still apt.

I wonder if Intellectual Frighter still loves talking to apostates like he originally told All_Brains? Seems like he doesn't anymore.

All he did is to raise all possible meanings for the word, and all of the other possibilities made no sense in the context. If I say the word "beat", it could mean a physical beating, or defeating someone in a contest or intellectually defeating someone, or even the beat of a drum. But if we apply this to the wife recommendations, defeating your wife in a contest doesn't make sense, nor does intellectually defeating your wife make sense, nor does beating a drum make sense. In the surrounding context of the verse, we can clearly see that it meant physical beating. All Intellectual Fighter did was to come up with every possible meaning of the word in order to raise any doubt and/or confusion that he could, while completely ignoring the obvious context.

But these are the same people who will ask you to consider the larger context if they think it will suit their argument. Very dishonest people. Notoriously shifty.
