Archbishop of Cantebury 'Sharia Law Unavoidable'Today the Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams said the UK had to "face up to the fact" some citizens do not relate to the British legal system. He said adopting parts of Islamic Sharia law could help social cohesion. For example, Muslims could choose to have marital disputes or financial matters dealt with in a Sharia court.
I have no doubt that the Archbishop of Canterbury hoped his comments would help improve ‘social cohesion’. But saying that some aspects of Shari’ah Law in the UK were unavoidable, is only going to increase fear, paranoia and division in society.
Not only are his comments going to inflame an already tense situation, but it is not what the majority of Muslims in the UK want. Many Muslims came here fleeing repressive regimes where Shari’ah Law was very much part of their problem. They came here to escape backward Mullahs who sit in their Shari’ah courts playing God over people’s lives. The last thing they want is for the British Government to give such people power over them here in the UK. People like Sheikh Sohaib Hasan of the Islamic Shari’ah Council of Britain - a hard-line narrow-minded little man who peddles the harshest form of Wahhabi doctrine.
By recognising such people, the Government would be in effect handing those who sought sanctuary back to the bully. Sadly Muslims cannot say publicly what they privately feel – that they do not want Shari’ah law in the UK. As Abdullahi An-Na’im rightly said:
“Although many contemporary Muslims would privately object to Shari’ah’s suppression of freedom of belief and expression, very few are willing to express their objection publicly for fear of being branded as apostates themselves – guilt by association. Other Muslims would find it difficult to admit their objections, even to themselves, for fear of losing their faith in the process.”
british government rejects sharia call
London - The British government Thursday rejected calls by the leader of the Anglican Church that Islamic (sharia) law should be introduced in the country to promote social cohesion.
'The Prime Minister believes British law should apply in this country, based on British values,' said a spokesman for Gordon Brown.
The comment was seen as a sharp rebuke for Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury and leader of the worldwide Anglican Church, who said earlier Thursday that he believed that the introduction of sharia in Britain was 'unavoidable.'
Brown's spokesman said it was the government's position that Islamic law 'cannot be used as a justification for committing breaches of English law, nor should the principles of sharia law be included in a civil court for resolving contractual disputes.'
And you ought to see some of the comments on this... its almost hilarious !
